BiographyJerzy Grotowski (11 August 1933 - 14 January 1999) was a Polish theatre director and is know for experimental theatre, the "theatre laboratory" and "poor theatre" concepts.
Grotowski joined the Polish Laboratory Theatre of Wrocaw in 1959 and founded a company in 1965. The Laboratory Theatre debut with Acropolis in 1969 it was followed by Undertaking Mountain 1977 and Undertaking Earth in 1978, by which time Grotowski was living in the U.S as an avant-garde theorist, he wanted to create dramatic tension by setting up emotional confrontations between audience and actors. His book "Towards a Poor Theater" (1968) emphasized the importance of the actor and encouraged minimal stage sets. He influenced U.S. experimental theatre movements, like the Living theatre. |

reflectionGrotowskis methods were a lot of fun to work with. We all puts on masks and had to express our emotions through body language. Being forced into a situation in which you felt as if something was trapped in your body and was trying to communicate without basic things like speech and facial expressions, was an experience which I thought personally, made me feel like I was suddenly able to speak a different language. And now without the masks when I act I'm able to communicate a stronger message.
